LEWISBURG, Pa. - Backed by 14 kills from Jackie Leahy and 10 from Brandi Trapasso, the Bucknell volleyball team kicked off its own Bucknell Invitational with a 3-0 victory over Howard Friday night in Davis Gym.
The victory was the third straight for Bucknell (3-4), while Howard fell to 2-3. Both teams will face Dartmouth and Fairleigh Dickinson as tournament play resumes on Saturday.
Bucknell led nearly wire-to-wire in all three games, although hardly comfortably as Howard remained within striking distance throughout. Bucknell won 30-27, 30-23, 30-27.
Jennie Smith added six kills and Chelsea Anderson has 12 digs for Bucknell, while Breean Trapasso logged 31 assists.
Kollin Hoskins led Howard with 12 kills, while Jenica Leonard added nine kills and 13 digs. The visitors outhit Bucknell .143 to .129 but were hampered by 14 service errors.
"Howard was very athletic and a good jumping team," commented Bison head coach Cindy Opalski after the match. "That was as good an offense as we will see this year, and I thought we were very strong at the net. A real strength was our outside hitters. Brandi Trapasso and Jackie Leahy were aggressive and were able to terminate."
Bucknell battles Dartmouth Saturday 12:30 p.m. and FDU at 5:30 p.m.
