LEWISBURG, Pa. - Shannon Ellis, who spent the 2002 season as a graduate assistant coach with the Bucknell volleyball team, has been elevated to top assistant coach as part of an upgrade in the Bison volleyball coaching staff.
"When we made the commitment to enhance the assistant volleyball coaching position, our desire was to hire a strong candidate with a significant amount of volleyball experience," said head coach Cindy Opalski. "Shannon brings a wealth of Division 1 playing experience into the gym every day. In addition to being a strong teacher and motivator, we hope she will continue to make a significant impact on our offensive attack and blocking schemes."
"Shannon was a positive addition to our coaching staff last season," said associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator Amanda Backus. "We are very excited to have the opportunity to elevate Shannon's position, allowing her to focus more time towards recruiting and working with our student-athletes."
Prior to her arrival at Bucknell, Ellis earned two varsity letters in volleyball at Texas Christian University, before graduating from Brigham Young University in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education with a minor in mathematics.
Ellis served as a student teacher at Lehi (Utah) High School in 2001-02, where she taught fitness for life and lifetime sports. She also coached the varsity volleyball team and the junior varsity softball team, and she was an assistant basketball coach.
An Academic All-Western Athletic Conference selection during her playing days at TCU, Ellis has served as a coach and counselor at the Debbie Sokol Volleyball Camp, the TCU Volleyball Camp and the Lake Olympia (Texas) Volleyball Camp.
Last season Ellis helped guide the Bucknell volleyball team to a 15-13 final record (9-5 Patriot League) and a berth in the Patriot League Tournament.
