LEWISBURG, Pa. - As the 2003 outdoor track & field season comes to a close, Bucknell will try to claim a pair of conference titles at the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships at its own Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison women will aim to repeat as league champs and capture their fifth consecutive league crown, while the men will try to knock Army off of their 11-year streak. The two-day event begins tomorrow and runs through Saturday, May 3.
The Bison have many outstanding competitors that will look to lead the women to victory. Student-athletes to watch in the short sprints include Kiley MacDonald and Edwina Bourn. The 200 and 400-meter events will highlight the talents of Charity Brady, Amy Calvo, Monique Boley and Rehana Lanewala.
In the mid-distance races, Jennifer Marsh and Jennifer Malcolm will lead the pack. Providing depth in the distance races include Theresa Dennis, Katherine Pfeifer and Alison Cole. Along with distance races, Julie Jakaboski, Jamie Gow and Katie Fantauzzo will also look to finish at the top in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Maria Garcia, Elizabeth Pendelton and Angela McFarland will headline Bucknell's throwing competition in the weight throw and the shot put. Abigail Bouzan-Kaloustian will look to reach new heights in the pole vault, while Tolulope Fayanjuola, Dionne Bonds, Jamie Lilien and newcomer Brandi Trapasso will try to obtain more points for the Bison in the jumps.
On the men's side, Mike Mellas and Richard Alexander will try to post winning times in the 110-high hurdles and 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Standout four-time champion in 2001, Noel Powell will contend in the 100- and 200-meter dash, along with Ryan Newberger and Matt Solomon. Eric Furst and Lou Palma will run the mid-distance races. Daniel Lounsbury and Douglas Creveling aim to place high in the distance events for the Bison. Bryan Johnston and Ryan Delaney look to add points in the 3,000-steeplechase.
Powell will look to continue his record-breaking streak in the long jump, while Justin Alden-Dunn will compete in the pole vault. Adam Kaufman and Justin McKnight will look for distance in the throwing events.
Both the men's and the women's relay teams have competed well this season and should be among the top finishers at the championships.
