LEWISBURG, Pa. - After beginning the day in second place, just three strokes off the lead, the Bucknell women's golf team struggled in the final round of the Bucknell Spring Classic and settled for fifth place. The Bison shot 338 on Sunday, 15 strokes higher than their first-round total.
Brown University captured the tournament title with a 36-hole total of 651, holding off a hard-charging Long Island squad by just a single stroke. Harvard finished three shots back at 654, while first-round leader St. Francis (Pa.) also faltered on Sunday and finished at 657, four shots ahead of Bucknell.
Cleveland State (682), Dartmouth (684), St. Mary's (Ind.) (698), Wagner (716), Monmouth (720), Central Connecticut (732), Lehigh (740), Kutztown (787) and McDaniel (809) rounded out the field.
Senior Amy Jones was Bucknell's lone top-10 finisher. Jones fired a career-low 76 on Saturday before slipping to 86 on Sunday. Still, her 36-hole composite of 162 was good for a tie for eighth place. Jess Hetrich carded a team-best 83 on Sunday and finished in 12th place at 163. Jaime Hays shot a final-round 84 and finished at 171, while Molly Campbell totaled 165 after rounds of 80 and 85.
Kristen Obush of Cleveland State took medallist honors with rounds of 78 and 76. Jennifer Cronan of Harvard was the only other competitor to piece together two rounds in the 70s, shooting 79 and 78 to finish three strokes back of Obush.
Bucknell continues its spring season next weekend with its first-ever appearance at the Big South Championship.
