March Females Recognized as Athletes of the Month

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Seven female Bison athletes were named the Athlete of the Month Award for their respective sport for the month of March. The seven outstanding athletes included Cody Keffer for women's water polo, Jill Wurzburg for women's tennis, Lauren Wible and Lauren Box for softball, Theresa Dennis for outdoor track and field, Nicole Kallis for women's lacrosse, and Amy Jones for women's golf.
The February awards were announced at the monthly Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, held Thursday, March 6. Sponsored by K.I.C.K.S. Marshall Arts for Women and Curves for Women, the luncheon recognizes one outstanding student-athlete from each Bucknell women's sport in season at that time.
Kefer leads the water polo team with 27 goals and 19 assists on the season. The sophomore also leads the team with 29 steals. Bucknell holds a 10-10 record overall and 5-3 in the CWPA Southern Division. The Bison will participate in the ECAC Championships on April 5-6 and will host the Southern Division Championships on April 11-13 in Kinney Natatorium.
Wible has started in all 23 games for Bucknell. The first basemen works for a .989 fielding percentage and leads the team, along with junior Angie Stackhouse, in doubles (6). Patiently at the plate, Wible has been walked 13 times throughout her 59 at-bats. Box has pitched 45.1 innings for the Bison. She has made 12 appearances and struck-out 10 batters. The senior has started in eight of the 12 games she has appeared in. Box owns a 0-7 record. Bucknell softball owns a 4-19 overall record and 1-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison are scheduled to host PL foe Lafayette for a four-game series on April 5-6.
At UMBC "Big Dawg Invitational", Dennis earned a bronze medal in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.63. Last weekend at the NC State- Raleigh Relays, Dennis completed the 10K in 36:18.28 and placed 13th overall. The senior now stands fourth on BU's all-time charts. The Bison will visit the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., on April 4-5 for the Colonial Relays. The Orange and Blue will host their first outdoor meet of the 2003 season, Bucknell Quadrangular, on April 11-12.
Kallis has started all eight contests the Bison have faced. The goalie has faced 196 shots and protected 92 saves, allowing only 63 enter the net. The senior is ranked fifth among the nation's top goalies with a save percentage of .594. Bucknell owns a 4-4 overall record and 2-2 in the league. The Bison have won the last three games, defeating Lehigh, Holy Cross, and Mount Saint Mary's. The Herd will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Duquesne on April 5.
Wurzburg holds a 15-5 singles record and is 10-4 with teammate Sam Berthod and 4-2 with teammate Tanya Sitchko in doubles. The Bison tennis team is 9-1 on the spring season and 1-0 in the Patriot League.
At the first round of the William and Mary Invitational, March 29, Jones shot 82. The second day was cancelled due to rain and the Bison finished tied for 12th. In the fall, the senior averaged 87.6. She achieved a season low of 80 on day-two of the Nittany Lion Invitational on Oct. 5. The Bison host their annual Bucknell Invitational next Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6, at the Bucknell University Golf Club.
The next Women's Sport Luncheon will be held on Thursday, April 24 at noon.
