WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell defense overcame two errors to backup a solid pitching performance from Lauren Box, who won her second game in two days, with a 3-0 shutout in the opener of a doubleheader at Army, April 25. The Bison fell victim to Ashlie Christian's eight-strikeout performance in the nightcap, dropping a 5-0 game to the Black Knights.
Meredith Gill got BU on the board in the top of the third. The shortstop hit a two-out single to left field, scoring Box, who had reached on a walk to open the inning.
Bucknell struck again in the top of the fourth, plating two runs on one hit and two Army errors. Kris Devore reached base on a miscue by the pitcher, and Lauren Wible delivered a timely double to score Devore. One out later, Box reached on another Black Knight error, and Wible moved to third on the play. Both players advanced on a wild pitch, giving the Orange and Blue the 3-0 lead.
Army threatened in its half of the inning three different times, but Bucknell found a way out of the jam each time to preserve the win.
Gill finished the contest 2-for-4, while Box went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits and striking out four.
It was Army jumping out to an early lead in the nightcap, scoring once in the first and again in the third. Lindsey Romack led off the bottom of the first with a triple, and one out later, Lauren Gobar blasted a three-bagger to right field, scoring Romack.
Gobar tripled again in the bottom of the third, before scoring on a Bucknell error on the play.
The Black Knights put the game out of reach with three more runs in their half of the fifth. Army pounded out four hits in the frame, including RBI doubles by both Lindsay March and Lisa Huntington.
Gill went 2-for-3 from the plate in the losing effort.
Bucknell is 11-30 overall and 6-11 in the Patriot League. The Bison are taking on Holy Cross in their third game of the day under the lights at Army. The Black Knights are 16-21 overall and 7-11 in conference action.
