LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Bucknell softball team traveled to Rider on Tuesday, April 22, dropping a 3-2 opener and 8-0 nightcap in a doubleheader. Lauren Box was the hard luck loser in the opener, while Julie Williams was on the losing end of the Broncs' one-hit shutout.
Both teams were scoreless in the opener, until Bucknell got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth. Meredith Gill led off the inning with a walk. Jenna Fitch sacrificed Gill to second, before Angela Stackhouse singles to center field, advancing Gill to third. Stackhouse stole second, and one out later, Kris Devore singles to right center, scoring both base runners for the 2-0 lead.
The lead was shortlived, however, as the host team struck back in its half of the sixth. Courtney Weed hit a one-out single, before Brandey Weed clubbed a triple to right center for Rider's first run of the game. Jill Carrabus followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Brandey Weed to tie the contest.
Bucknell had runners on first and second in the top of the seventh after a Lauren Box single and a Jill Pompeii walk, but the Bison could not produce.
The Broncs, however, made the most of two hits and a walk in their half of the inning, plating the winning run on a two-out single by Courtney Weed.
Box pitched the complete game for BU, giving up six hits and striking out a season-best six batters.
In the nightcap, Rider scored early and often on its way to an 8-0 five-inning win. Bucknell committed five errors in the contest, while only collecting one hit.
The Broncs did most of their damage in the third inning, scoring six runs on six hits and three Bison miscues.
Bucknell's only hit came in the second inning when Devore opened the frame with a single to left field. Rider pitcher Heather Beintema sat the next three Orange and Blue batters down in order to get out of the inning unscathed.
Bucknell is 8-29 overall. The Bison host Lafayette for a Patriot League doubleheader on Thursday, April 24, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Rider is 15-15 overall.
