WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Meredith Gill went 4-for-4 against Holy Cross, but it was a failed effort as the Bison softball team fell to the Crusaders, 6-4, on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Bucknell led by as many as three, but Holy Cross scored six runs over the final three innings to come away with the victory. The teams only played the first game of a scheduled doubleheader due to the inclement weather.
Bucknell dropped to 3-18 and 1-2 in the conference, while Holy Cross improved to 2-12 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League.
The Orange and Blue had early momentum scoring one run with two outs in the first, third and fourth innings. In the first inning, freshman Lauren Wible doubled in Bucknell's first run. Then in the third inning, rookie Alyssa Schneebaum singled in the second run of the game. Bucknell struck yet again with two outs in the fourth when junior Kristen Potts singled in sophomore Jennifer Ross to put the Bison up 3-0.
Holy Cross responded in the fourth with two runs of its own. Catcher Alycia FitzPatrick and junior tri-captain Nicole Vitti both drove in runs. HC then rallied for three runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Greene delivered a double to left field scoring all three Crusader runners, putting HC ahead for the first time 5-3.
Bucknell responded with a run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Angela Stackhouse, cutting the HC advantage to 5-4. Jean Connolly put the game out of reach in the Crusader half of the sixth when she singled in Nicole Dessingue, making the score 6-4.
Vitti picked up her second win in two days and improved to 2-5 overall this season. She pitched all seven innings surrendering four runs on a season-high 10 hits by the Bison. Freshman Julie Williams took the loss for the Orange and Blue, allowing six hits and striking out one.
Bucknell is in action next on Tuesday, April 2 at Towson for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
