WESTOVER, Md. - Bucknell junior Abbie Valentine battled difficult weather conditions to card a four-over-par 76 on Sunday, leading the Bison men's golf squad to a tie for 12th place in a 20-team field at the Drew Upton Tiger Classic, hosted by Towson University at Great Hope GC.
Valentine shot 81 in Saturday's opening round and tied for 12th overall with a 36-hole total of 157. Bucknell shot 323 as a team in an opening round that was suspended due to rain, and eventually darkness. Scores were high again on Sunday with more cold, soggy conditions on the 7,047-yard course, and the Bison finished up with a 332.
No golfer broke par all weekend, and only 19 of 99 competitors broke 80 in the second round.
Alex Dolle and Tom Lane both scored in the 70s in the opening round, with Dolle carding a 78 and Lane a 79. Both players shot 87 on Sunday and finished in 52nd and 58th place, respectively. Ben Pellicani shot 85-84 and tied for 68th, while Chris Martinez finished 84th (89-85).
Penn won the team title with a 36-hole total of 625 (310-315), finishing just one stroke better than Navy (316-310). Duquesne was four shots back at 629, while first-round leader Skidmore and Delaware tied for fourth. Bucknell and Columbia tied for 12th at 655, both missing the top-10 by seven strokes.
Chad Perman of Penn was the medallist, finishing at 5-over 149 (72-77). He was four shots clear of Skidmore's Ben Bates (74-79).
Bucknell returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
