WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell softball team split a pair of games at Patriot League rival Holy Cross on Saturday, March 29, losing the opener 2-1 and winning the nightcap, 2-0. The Crusaders picked up their first win of the 2003 season in dramatic fashion, scoring two runs late in the game to beat the Bison 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.
In game one, Bucknell jumped out to a quick 1-0 when senior shortshop Meredith Gill homered in the first at-bat of the game off junior pitcher Nicole Vitti. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Vitti helped her own cause singling in Michelle Greene, who had reached on a fielder's choice. After shuting down the Bison in the top half of the inning, HC came right back in the sixth. Things looked promising after sophomore Mary Beth Ryan doubled to start the inning and stole third base, but she was victimized by a line out double play shortly thereafter. With two outs, junior Jean Connolly singled to right field and scored on a double to the gap by freshman Megan Lally. The Bison were held in check by the Crusader defense in the top of the seventh and Vitti and the Crusaders both picked up their first wins of the season.
In game two of the double header, sophomore pitcher Kelli Haskins shutout the Crusaders in seven innings of work. Haskins gave up five hits and no runs in the game and only walked one batter. The game was a scoreless tie until the Bucknell half of the sixth inning, when junior catcher Angela Stackhouse singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Kris Devore. Bucknell added an insurance run, to make the score 2-0 in the top of the seventh, on a Stackhouse double that scored junior second baseman Kristen Potts from first. HC's Michelle Greene pitched all seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out six batters.
The Orange and Blue are in action again on Sunday, March 30, hosting another doubleheader against the Crusaders. Game one is set to start at 12:00 (noon).
