Bison Track and Field Begin Outdoor Season At UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Bucknell outdoor track and field teams traveled to University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday, March 22 for their first outdoor meet of the season. Stephen Schaefer, Lou Palma, Nicki Piper and Maria Garcia each earned a gold medal in the first outdoor competition.
At the non team scoring meet, Schaefer ran the 3,000-meter steeple chase in 9:35.22 for a first place finish. Palma crossed the line in the 5,000-meter run at 15:05.64 for the gold. Adam Kaufman received a silver medal in the hammer throw with a measurement of 152'9". Thomas Bennett leaped 40'3.25" in the triple jump for second place.
Eric Furst earned a bronze medal when he crossed the line at 3:58.64 in the 1,500-meter run. Throwing the javelin 152'9", Will Minehart received a third place medal. Adam Jacob received third place honors after clearing 14'0" in the pole vault.
On the women's side of competition, Piper placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.01. Jen Malcolm (3rd, 2:23.41), Monique Boley (5th, 2:24.92) and Christina Stamoolis (7th, 2:26.95) followed Piper. Maria Garcia received a gold medal after throwing the hammer 162'7". She also improved her all-time mark to fifth on the BU charts. Liz Pendleton (135'5"), Danielle Brown (134'4"), Gwen Soult (131'3") and Laura Schaffer (131'1") filled the third through six places.
Receiving silver medals for the Bison included, Katie Fantauzzo finishing the 3,000-meter steeple chase with a time of 12:21.02. She improved her time by over 1.5 seconds on the all-time charts. Kiley MacDonald ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.70 for a second place honor. Jamie Gow finished the 5,000-meter in 18:45.13 for a silver medal, while Jessica Daniel crossed the line at 19:57.58 for a third place honor. Robin Meling wrapped up the silver medal recognitions with a leap of 34'7" in the triple jump.
Theresa Dennis earned a bronze medal in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.63, while Piper followed with a time of 4:56.41. Mac Donald ran the 100-meter hurdles in 14.95 in the preliminaries and finished third in the finals with a time of 15.40.
Brown captured a third place finish with a toss of 114'7" in the javelin. Megan Frederick followed with a measurement of 110'8". Frederick received a bronze medal in the shot-put with a 40'4". She now stands eighth on the all-time charts and is the first Bison since 2000 to be listed in the record book. Schaffer threw 39'10" in the shot-put and now stands 10th all-time.
Next weekend, March 28-29, the Bison will travel to the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., and some members will also participate in the Susquehanna Invitational in Selinsgrove, Pa.
