OSCEOLA, FLA. - The Bison softball team fought hard to find a win on day five in Florida, but fell 5-3 to both Tennessee Martin and Saint Joseph's. The team was able to make contact with a total of nine hits on the day and six runs.
In game one of the morning, the Bison faced Tennessee Martin. Bucknell made the first marks on the scoreboard in the second inning with three runs. Lauren Wible was walked and started the move around for a score. Meredith Gill jumped on first, while the UTM pitcher, Allison Buckley, made a throwing error to first. Kris Davore proceeded with a line out to second base, which kept Wible and Gill put. Catcher Jenna Fitch grounded to third, but with a fielding error, all three Bison members advanced a base. Alyssa Schneebaum grabbed a single and also received the RBI when Wible scored. Kristin Potts advanced to first on an error by UTM's second baseman, sending both Gill and Fitch over the home plate. The inning ended with two Bison left on base and two unearned runs.
Bucknell held Tennessee Martin from scoring until the fourth inning when Bison pitcher, Julie Williams, walked UTM's Christa Webb and then Kristin Runyan hit a triple down the left line allowing Webb to score.
The Orange and Blue were unable to score the rest of the game. In the sixth, the umpires robbed the Bison when a UTM foul ball was called fair to allow two runs to score. The Skyhawks scored two more runs as Meridith Ramsey hit a double into play in the bottom of the seventh, to bring the game to an end.
Williams pitched the entire game for the Bison, giving up nine hits and three earned runs.
Against Saint Joseph's, Bucknell fell behind in the second inning when pitcher Lauren Box walked two Hawk players. Saint Joseph's Jill Clementi scored on a pass ball by Fitch and Robin Berry scored with an assist of a single. The Bison closed the inning with a double play hit by the Hawk's pitcher, Brandie Adams. Davore threw to Potts and tagged the player out at second and then proceeded to continue the play by throwing to Wible to tag the player out at first.
In the second inning, the Hawks scored two more runs. The Bison retired Box and Kellie Haskins came in as a reliever, with no outs. Saint Joseph's scored two more runs in the third inning to improve their lead, 4-0.
Bucknell's defense finished the top of the fifth on a three-up, three-down attitude. To start the bottom of the fifth, Jill Pompeii was walked and both Angie Stackhouse and Wible advanced to first on a fielder's choice, while the Hawks were unable to make an out. The bases were loaded when Devore stepped up and also advanced to first on a fielder's choice allowing Pompeii to score. Adams walked Gill to make her final pitch of the afternoon, when the Hawk's replaced her with Kate Reisch with one out. Gill's walk advanced everyone on base and scored Stackhouse. Haskins singled behind first base to score Wible, and narrowed the score by down one run.
In the sixth inning, SJU's Gale Treskot hit a double and the Bison were able to keep her at third, allowing no runs to score. The Hawk's scored one last run in the top of the seventh.
Box pitched two innings and gave up three hits, four runs and walked two. Haskins finished the game and allowed six hits, one run and two walks.
