LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Kevin Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) was honored as the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week after scoring 21 points at No. 3 Michigan State last Friday night. His total led all Bucknell scorers and was tied for a game-high with Michigan State standout center Paul Davis. The Bison lost to the Spartans, 64-52, but only after Michigan State went on a 15-2 run in the last five minutes of the game.
Fifteen of Bettencourt's 21 points were from three-point territory, and his 14 attempts from beyond the arc set a Bucknell all-time record. The point guard also had three two-point field goals, giving him an 8-for-20 shooting total on the night. He and Davis was one of only three double-digit scorers in the game, as Michigan State's Chris Hill put in 12. The next closest Bison scorer was Chris Niesz, who had two three-pointers on his way to eight points in the game.
Bucknell (0-1) led Michigan State 50-49 until the Spartan run started with just under five minutes to go in the second half. The Bison will look for their first win of the season on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the home opener at Sojka Pavilion against Yale.
