Bucknell Volleyball Moves to 4-0 in Patriot League with Win over Lafayette

Lewisburg, Pa. - A day after sweeping Lehigh, the Bison pulled out the brooms on Saturday against Lafayette, winning 3-0. Bucknell dominated virtually the entire match, winning 30-20, 30-15, and 30-17.
As a team, the Bison hit .299, its best of the season, and held the Leopards to just .055 on offense. Brandi Trapasso led the Bison with 13 kills while Jackie Leahy had 11 and Jennie Smith tacked on eight. Defensively, the Bison had three people in double digits, as Breean Trapasso had 16, Brandi Trapasso had 10, and Chelsea Anderson added 10 of her own.
The match was tight early in game one, but Bucknell was able to gain a momentum that it would not surrender, taking the game 30-20. While Bucknell hit .200 for the game, it held Lafayette to just .108 hitting. The Bucknell defense became even more stifling in game two, keeping the Leopards in negative hitting percentage at -.083, while the offense had its best game, hitting .357.
After the 30-15 game two win, the Leopards had their best offensive game of the afternoon at .139, but the Bison converted their attacks at a .342 clip, taking the game 30-17 and the match, 3-0.
"We see a definite strength in our ability to incorporate different people in our offense and we're getting everyone involved. Defensively, we were able to neutralize just one person, and that made the difference," Bucknell Head Coach Cindy Opalski said.
Lafayette's most frequent attacker, Veronica Canto-Ponce, hit -.081 for the match with nine kills and 12 errors on 37 attacks, one of two Leopards in negative percentages, as Shannon Fisher hit -.222 with nine attacks. Lafayette's most successful hitter was Heidi Olichwier, who had six kills on 14 attacks.
The Bison will return to action next weekend as they make the Patriot League's southern swing, visiting American on Friday, Oct. 10 and Navy on Saturday, Oct. 11, both at 7 p.m.
