Lewisburg, Pa. - The Bucknell women's volleyball team defeated Colgate this afternoon in Davis Gym, 3-1, improving the Bison to a 6-1 record in league play after having faced all seven other teams in the Patriot League. It is the first time that the Bison are 6-1 in conference play since the Patriot League admitted American in 2001, expanding to eight schools.
Becky Fisher was Bucknell's leading hitter with a career-high 17 kills and a .519 percentage, while Jessica Bissett hit .429 with 11 kills. Fisher's previous match high was five kills. The Bison also had two other players with double-digit kills, as Brandi Trapasso recorded 16 and Sarah Groman 11. Defensively, the Bison were paced by Brandi Trapasso's 19 digs and Chelsea Anderson's 18, while Carolyn Dougherty added 10.
"We had an excellent offensive match from Becky Fisher. We were always telling her to get ready [to make a big contribution], and we put her in there and she did really well," Bucknell Head Coach Cindy Opalski said.
Bucknell took the first two games, 30-21 and 30-13, respectively. Game two was Bucknell's superior game of the four, as the Bison held Colgate to a .000 hitting percentage while hitting .581 offensively. But Colgate roared back in game three, outhitting Bucknell .163 to .056 in the Bison's lowest-percentage game of the afternoon. Colgate took game three in the end of a back-and-forth duel, 32-30.
The Bison were able to quash the momentum the Raiders gained with their game three win, as Bucknell closed out the match, 30-24. Bucknell hit .316 in the game.
"We're back on track running offense with secondary contributions from a variety of different people. We're playing good defense. Offense puts people in the seats and gets people excited, but defense wins championships," Opalski said.
Colgate's best hitter with double-digit attacks was Caity Whiteaker, who had 12 kills and hit .233 and was the only Raider with double-digit attempts to hit over .200.
The Bison will return to action on Friday, Oct. 24 at Holy Cross and on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Army.
