BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Freshman Charlie Waddell shot a two-over-par 72 and captain Abbie Valentine joined him in the top 10 with an opening-round 73 Friday to lead the Bison to a 303 composite and a sixth-place standing after the first of two rounds of the Hofstra Invitational. Bucknell started four freshmen in its final fall tournament.
Waddell came within one stroke of his career best Friday at the Bethpage State Park Red Course. He sits in a three-way tie for fifth place in the clubhouse, two shots out of a three-way tie for the lead.
Valentine, who owns Bucknell's low scoring average this fall, is a shot back in a tie for eighth place.
Eric Couture of Saint Francis (Pa.), Steve Velardi of Quinnipiac and Blake Russell of Hofstra are tied for the individual lead.
The host Pride and Quinnipiac shot 294 to share the first-round lead by one stroke over Saint Francis. Lafayette (296) and Delaware (298) are also ahead of Bucknell.
First-year players Ryan Hom (79), Kyle Moran (79) and Patrick Yingling (81) rounded out the Bison contingent.
The tournament concludes on Saturday at Bethpage.
