LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three Bucknell student-athletes earned Patriot League weekly honors on Monday after leading their teams to outstanding performances last week.
Michael Lookingland (Fallston, Md./Loyola) and Adam Edwards (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) earned player of the week honors for men's soccer, while freshman running back Blamah Sarnor was named rookie of the week in football.
Lookingland nabbed his first BRINE Defensive Player of the Week award this season, while Edwards was tabbed the BRINE Rookie of the Week for the second time this year. Lookingland, a sophomore, garnered the defensive award after directing the Bucknell defense to a pair of 1-0 victories over 18th-ranked Pittsburgh and Patriot League rival Colgate. The Bison defense allowed just seven total shots on goal in the two games, including only one in the League win over the Raiders.
Edwards, the team's starting goalkeeper, is the top rookie again after earning the two shutouts for the Orange and Blue. The netminder was tested several times on the way to a six-save performance in the 1-0 triumph over nationally ranked Pittsburgh. He responded with a 1-0 win over league rival Colgate, stopping the only shot he faced on his way to the victory.
The Bucknell defense has allowed only three goals through seven games, posting five shutouts in the process.
The Bison, 1-1 in the Patriot League, are off to a 6-1 start overall, the best in the program's history since 1990. BU is in action next on Tuesday, September 24, when they host Niagara for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
Sarnor was honored after rushing for 100 yards in his first career start in Saturday's 14-3 victory over Cornell. Sarnor earned the start with a big fourth quarter at St. Mary's on Sept. 14, and he made the most of the opportunity. He carried 21 times for an even 100 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown tote that gave Bucknell an early 7-0 lead.
Sarnor is the first Bison freshman to rush for 100 yards in a game since Rich Lemon - Bucknell's all-time leading rusher - in 1993.
Inserted in the fourth quarter at St. Mary's two weeks ago, Sarnor logged 85 total yards (42 rushing, 43 receiving) and tied the game on an 8-yard touchdown run with only 36 seconds remaining in regulation. St. Mary's went on to win 23-22 in double overtime.
The Cornell win upped Bucknell's record to 1-2 on the season. The Bison host Delaware State this Saturday at 1 p.m.
