LEWISBURG, Pa. - At this weekend's Bull Run Inn-vitational, the Bucknell women's volleyball team may not have walked away with the title, but it was a championship effort from a young Bison squad. The tournament's Tiebreaker Procedure had to be utilized to determine all four places, in a weekend where closely contested matches reflected the parity of the four teams.
The Bison started the day off with a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac. Bucknell won 30-24, 30-22, and 30-24. During this match Brandi Trapasso led the Bison with 15 kills and Breean Trapasso made 36 assists. Both Chelsea Anderson and Jennifer Wrigley dominated in digs with a total of 23 between the two athletes.
Bucknell concluded tournament play in the last match of the day. The Bison came out strong on the court in the last play of the day. The Orange and Blue won the first game against LaSalle, in a tight 30-28 game. The Bison then fell the next three games to the Explorers, 30-25, 30-19 and another close 30-28.
Quinnipiac University was crowned tournament champions, squeaking by the University at Albany in Head-to-Head competition, both with a record of 2-1.
The last match of the day saw the Bison playing for the championship, but the Bison were edged by LaSalle who took home third place with a 3-1 win.
"Overall I'm pleased with our efforts this weekend. We saw great leadership and aggressiveness from our upperclassmen and we feel that playing strong competition early in the season will better prepare us for our Patriot League opponents," said Coach Opalski.
Bucknell's Breean Trapasso and Chelsea Anderson were named to the All-Tournament team.
"Bree has done an outstanding job of running the offense and controlling tempo over the last two weekends. Chelsea's defensive play and composure on the court has afforded us the opportunity to run a much quicker offense, allowing us to catch our opponents off guard. It is fitting that these two are being recognized by the tournament staff," said Coach Opalski.
The Bison return to the gym to prepare for next weekend when they host Morgan State University and Central Connecticut University in Davis Gym. The day begins with the match between Bucknell and Morgan State at 11:00 am. The Bison will then play again at 3:30 against Central Connecticut.
