LEWISBURG, Pa. - Randall Flynn, former member of Maryland's national champion women's lacrosse team and most recently head coach at Franklin & Marshall, has been selected to fill the head women's lacrosse coach position at Bucknell University, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced.
A 1997 graduate of the University of Maryland, Flynn has served as the head coach of the Division III Franklin & Marshall program since 1999. While in that role, she has led the team to a top-15 national ranking in each season, while also consistently coaching players to regional and national All-America status. In addition to her role as the head women's lacrosse coach, Flynn has also served as the assistant women's soccer coach for the Diplomats the past three years.
"Randall Flynn is an outstanding addition to Bucknell's coaching staff," said Hardt. "Randall's extensive and successful lacrosse background, including winning three NCAA titles as a student-athlete and eight years of experience in international play, will bring immediate dividends to our program. In addition, her successful experience as a head coach will provide our student-athletes with great leadership and a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow as players."
"Bucknell women's lacrosse has been developing a tradition of success, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue and improve on that tradition," commented Flynn. "I am excited to bring my collegiate playing knowledge, along with my international playing experience, to the Bucknell program. The educational opportunities for the student-athletes, combined with the support from the athletic department, make this an exciting place to be coaching."
Before arriving at F&M, Flynn enjoyed a one-year stint as the head girl's lacrosse and girl's soccer coach, assistant girl's basketball coach, and acting assistant athletic director at St. Mary's High School in Annapolis, Md. In addition to her coaching and administrative responsibilities at St. Mary's, her alma mater, Flynn, who received a bachelor of science in kinesiological sciences at Maryland, also taught health and sociology.
Flynn's involvement with nationally ranked women's lacrosse programs extends beyond the Division III level. During the 1997-98 season, she was an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a squad that advanced to the Division I NCAA Final Four.
For five years prior to her experience with the Tar Heels, Flynn was involved as either a player or a coach at Maryland. A student-athlete on the Terps lacrosse squad from 1993-96, the four-year starter was a member of Maryland's back-to-back national championship teams in 1995 and 1996. In addition, she served as an assistant coach for her alma mater when the Terps won their third consecutive national title in 1997.
An active participant in national coaching camps and clinics since 1993, Flynn is also involved in lacrosse on the international level. She has played on the United States Women's Lacrosse Team since 1994, was a member of the United States Touring Team in Australia during the summer of 2000, and most recently represented the United States as a member of the USA Women's Lacrosse World Cup Championship Team.
Flynn becomes Bucknell's eighth head women's lacrosse coach in the 24-year history of the program. The Bison finished the 2002 season 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the Patriot League.
