LEWISBURG, Pa. - Pam Armold, former head women's swimming coach at Cornell and most recently an assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Yale, has been selected to fill the newly created position of aquatics coordinator at Bucknell University, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced.
In her new role, Armold will oversee the daily operations of Bucknell's new natatorium, which is scheduled to open this September. She will coordinate all pool-related operations, including programming and facility scheduling for varsity, recreation and outside use. Armold will also be responsible for training and scheduling lifeguards, as well as aquatics event management.
"I am pleased to have Pam join our staff," said Hardt. "With our new natatorium coming on line this fall, we will be moving into uncharted territory in terms of the number of offerings and scope of aquatics programs that we will be able to provide on the Bucknell campus. In order to handle these exciting new opportunities, it was crucial that we hired a professional aquatics coordinator with broad-based experience in programming, meet management, swim instruction and pool operations. Pam's experience in intercollegiate athletics and recreation provide a great fit for maximizing the new facility."
A 1977 graduate of the University of Vermont, Armold had served as assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Yale since 1998. That followed a 10-year stint at Cornell, the first eight as an assistant men's and women's coach, and the last two (1996-98) as head women's coach after the Big Red program restructured.
Armold, who also received a master of science degree in physical education from Ithaca College in 1980, took her first head coaching position in the fall of 1980 at Humboldt State, where she coached the women's swimming team and lectured in the physical education department for eight years.
She has a wealth of recreational swimming experience as well, having served as an instructor in swimming, water safety and lifeguard training. Armold also managed a pair of swimming pools in Glendale, Calif., during her stint at Humboldt State.
Armold is certified by the American Red Cross in the areas of water safety instructor training, water safety instruction, lifeguard instruction and first aid/CPR instruction.
Bucknell's sparkling new natatorium, which is a significant component of the university's new Recreation and Athletics Center, features a 54-meter-by-25-yard Olympic-sized pool that will accommodate Bucknell's men's and women's swimming, diving and water polo teams, along with various recreational aquatics activities. It will feature two movable bulkheads that will allow team practices and recreational swimming to occur simultaneously. The natatorium will also include comfortable seating for 500 spectators with access to modern concession and restroom amenities.
The facility's first official event is slated for the weekend of Sept. 21-22, as the Bison men's water polo team hosts Navy, Princeton, George Washington and Johns Hopkins.
