LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior outfielder Lauren Titus (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) was selected by the Patriot League Sports Information Directors as the 2002 PL Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She is the fifth Bison student-athlete to win the academic honor this year, joining field hockey player Lauren Campbell, cross country runner Becki Marshall, indoor track & field runner Kelly McConnell and men's basketball player Dan Blankenship.
A scholar-athlete nominee must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. The winners are selected in a vote of the League's sport information directors.
With her selection, Titus becomes the 88th Bucknell student-athlete to be named a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete, and she is the fourth Bison softball player to earn the honor. Stacey Waite, a 1999 graduate, was the last Bucknell softball player to receive the award in 1999.
Titus is a biology major with minors in chemistry and Spanish, who maintains a 3.94 grade point average. The senior capped off an outstanding career in the classroom by earning Verizon First-Team Academic All-America honors earlier this month. Titus is the fifth Patriot League softball player to win national academic accolades. This year, she was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District II list for the second time in her career (2000).
In her eight semesters in Lewisburg, Titus has recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA four times. The senior outfielder has been on the Dean's List every semester and is a four-time Patriot League Honor Roll recipient. Titus is active on campus as a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Academic Honor Society and Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor fraternity. She was also honored with the President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement.
On the field, Titus started all 44 games for the Bison en route to a career-high and team-best .303 batting average. She also led the team with five doubles to compliment her 13 runs scored and four runs batted in. The leftfielder ended her career third on BU's all-time triples chart with 17 three-baggers in four seasons. Titus currently holds the school-record for triples in a season with eight in 1999.
The Bucknell softball team finished the season with a 12-32 overall record, and a mark of 5-15 in the Patriot League.
