LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three female Bison athletes were named the Athlete of the Month Award for their respective sport for the month of November. The three outstanding athletes for the month of November included senior Theresa Dennis for cross country, freshman Lindsay Geosits for basketball and junior Meghan Freese for swimming.
The awards were announced at the monthly Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, held Thursday, Dec. 5. Sponsored by K.I.C.K.S. Marshall Arts for Women and Curves for Women, the luncheon recognizes one outstanding student-athlete from each Bucknell women's sport in season at that time.
Dennis is a fourth year participant with the Bison and a three-year letter winner. The senior has received this award for the second time during the 2002 season. She completed the season atop the squad while placing first among the Bison in every meet. Dennis assisted the cross country team to a sixth place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet and a fourth place finish at the ECAC Championship. She accomplished her best times of the season at ECAC's on the 5k course with a time of 18:02, and 21:40 on the 6k course at the Pre-NCAA meet in October. The cross country teams have completed the 2002 season. Bucknell's track and field squads will begin competition on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. in Gerhard Field House in Lewisburg, Pa.
Geosits is a first year participant with the Bison. She has started in all six contests for the Bison and has played a total of 193 minutes. The freshman has scored 25 points and has committed only 11 turnovers as point guard. She leads the team in field goal shooting with a .500 average and is perfect from the foul line. The 5-7 guard stands in second on the squad with 50.0% accuracy from behind the arc. The Bucknell women's basketball team holds a 3-3 overall record. The Bison will visit University of Delaware on Sunday, Dec. 8 with a start time of 1 p.m.
Freese is a third year participant with the Bison and a two-year letter winner. The junior was named Patriot League Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 26 after setting the pool record in the 50 free with a time of 24.26, which is the fastest time in the PL this season. Freese has captured eight first-place finishes for the Bison during the 2002-03 campaign, and holds two pool records at home in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.04 and in the 50 freestyle (24.26). The Bison hold a 4-0 record in the pool and will host the Bucknell Trials and Finals Invitational on Dec. 7 & 8 in Kinney Natatorium, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday's luncheon also included a celebration for the 30th anniversary of Title IX. The next Women's Sport Luncheon will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6 at noon.
