LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell trailed by just three at halftime, 34-31, but shot a dismal 26.5% from the field in the second half to drop a Patriot League women's basketball game to visiting Holy Cross, 76-55, on Tuesday evening. The Bison were outscored 42-24 in the final frame to fall into a two-way tie with the Crusaders at 5-2 in the conference standings.
Bucknell held on to a 10-6 lead five minutes into the game, thanks to six points from junior Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) and four from senior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven), but Holy Cross chipped away at the advantage and took an 11-10 lead just two minutes later. The Orange and Blue briefly grabbed a 13-11 advantage on Franks' third three-pointer of the night, but the Crusaders answered with a 7-0 run to take a five-point edge, their largest of the half, at 18-13 with 9:14 left in the frame. Bucknell battled back to tie the score four more times in the opening stanza, but could not regain the lead and entered the halftime down, 34-31.
The Bison were down just one, 39-38, five minutes into the second half before eight straight points from Holy Cross made it 47-38 with just under 13 minutes to go. After a three-pointer and coast-to-coast layup by junior Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) cut the lead to four (47-43) with 11:48 on the clock, the Orange and Blue held the Crusaders to just four points over the next four minutes while getting within one, 51-50, with just under eight minutes in the game. It was all Holy Cross from there, however, as the visitors outscored Bucknell 25-5 down the stretch to come away with the 76-55 victory. In addition to shooting 52.0% in the half, the Crusaders also made 12-of-14 free throws in the final five minutes of the contest to secure the win.
Bucknell falls to 12-8 overall and 5-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison, now in a tie for first place in the conference, begin the second round of league play at Lafayette on Saturday, February 2, at 1:00 p.m. Holy Cross improves to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in the Patriot League.
