LEWISBURG, PA - Veronica Jutras, a 2000 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and a former All-Patriot League performer, was recently named as an assistant women's basketball coach at Bucknell University.
Jutras succeeds Jim Reed, who left Bucknell to become the head coach at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
"In the short time that she has been on board with our program, Veronica has already shown her tremendous work ethic, great enthusiasm, and a true desire to help make our program better," said head coach Kathy Fedorjaka. "She's been a part of a highly successful program at Holy Cross, and knows the personnel in the Patriot League and their style of play."
At Bucknell Jutras will work with all areas of the women's team, including game-day preparation, helping to organize and run practice sessions, scouting, recruiting, and monitoring the academic progress of each player.
Jutras comes to Bucknell from the Fountain Valley School of Colorado -- a co-educational boarding school in Colorado Springs. She served as the Assistant to the Athletic Director, coached the varsity girl's basketball team, and was an assistant coach for the girl's soccer team. As an athletic administrator, her responsibilities included, but were not limited to, scheduling events, managing a budget, and serving as the media contact for the department. In addition, Jutras has served as a summer camp instructor since 1996, working at four different camps. She assisted as the Holy Cross camp from 1996-1999, and worked the Brown University, Saint Anselm and WPI camps in 1997.
A native of Peterborough, New Hampshire, Jutras was a four-year starter for the Crusaders, helping to lead the team to an 88-28 record and four consecutive Patriot League regular-season titles. Holy Cross went 44-4 in Patriot League competition while Jutras was on the team, and won three Patriot League championships. She led the Crusaders in assists in each of her four years, and is the conference's all-time leader with 617. She ranks fifth in Patriot League history with 288 steals and sixth in games played with 115.
Jutras was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 1999-00, and was the College's NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in 2000. A terrific student who went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, she was on the Dean's List in five of her eight semesters and was a perennial member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Jutras was also a member of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society.
While at Holy Cross, Jutras interned for a semester at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf. She served as a classroom aid, and a part-time volunteer men and women's track, women's basketball, and weightlifting coach. Jutras, who concentrated in American Sign Language while she was at the College, ultimately produced a project on the significance of Deaf sport in a minority culture.
Bucknell officially opens the 2001-02 season on November 16 when it hosts Albany in Davis Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
