LEWISBURG, Pa. --- Bucknell University has begun accepting applications for the position of Head Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Coach to replace long-time coach Arthur F. Gulden, who passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2001, after succumbing to complications related to his lengthy battle with cancer. Gulden was in his 31st year at the helm of the Bucknell Program which under his direction won 68 conference titles and produced nearly a dozen student-athletes whom earned national Academic All-America honors.
"The Bucknell Track and Field/Cross Country program has had an outstanding record of success, in terms of both academic and athletic victories." said Director of Athletics John Hardt. "We are committed to continuing the support and building on the foundation of success that Coach Art Gulden has established over his many years leading the program."
A departmental search committee has been formed to make the recommendation of the preferred candidate to the Director of Athletics. The search committee will be chaired by Tim Pavlechko '91, Associate Athletics Director, and includes Gary Sojka, Professor of Biology and former University President, Heather Lewis, Head Field Hockey Coach, Gerry Commerford, Associate Dean of Students, and Bob Schanbacher, Assistant Track and Field Coach. In keeping with Bucknell's priority to have student-athlete involvement in all decision making, the search committee will solicit feedback from both a representation of current student-athletes and a special Alumni Advisory Panel, which will include Jonathan (Wally) Dietrich '97, Dr. Dan Davis '71, George Buckheit '79, Jim Knight '80 and Julie Sweitzer '99.
The national search will begin immediately, with the search committee reviewing candidates through the month of June. Recommendations and a subsequent hiring decision will be determined by the Director of athletics by the end of July. Individuals interested in applying for the position can find all pertinent information at http://bucknellbison.fansonly.com/library/buck-jobpostings.html.
During the interim, Director of Athletics John Hardt has appointed Joe Klim Interim Head Coach to oversee the administration of the program. Klim just completed his fifth year as an assistant with the Bison program and his 11th overall as a collegiate coach. In the events that he has been directly responsible for coaching, the Bison women have set six school records, and have had 33 top-5 performances and 45 top-10 performances, while the Bucknell men have set six school records, and have had 21 top-5 performances and 32 top-10 performances. Klim has helped lead seven teams to their first-ever conference title (four at Bucknell), and has been a part of coaching staffs that have produced 16 conference championship teams.
