Lewisburg, Pa. - The Bucknell women's golf team had much to talk about this Sunday as they finished third in their own spring invitational and set several milestones. Central Connecticut won the overall crown after shooting 636 and defeating Brown University in a tie-breaker. The Blue Devils moved into first place by shooting a weekend low of 313 on Sunday. The low medallist for the BU Spring Invitational was Elizabeth Carpenter from Brown who shot 72-71 in her two rounds on the Bucknell Golf Course.
The Orange and Blue improved by eight shots on Sunday by shooting 321 compared to their 329 on Saturday. Sunday's 321 is a new team record as the previous low score for 18-holes had been 323 set last year at the High Hampton Inn and Country Club. The Bison finished with a two-day total 650, which is also a new team record, wiping out the previous best by 22 strokes.
Also setting a Bucknell record and finishing fifth in the invitational was Bucknell's own, junior Hilary Mainka (Jenkintown, Pa./Germantown Academy). After shooting an 82 on the first day, Mainka shifted into high gear and shot a 77 on Sunday to pace the Bison. Mainka's 77 not only launched the Bison into third place but also became the best 18-hole round by an individual at Bucknell.
Sophomore Molly Campbell (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) played two solid rounds for the Bison by shooting 81 on both days. Finishing two strokes back from Campbell was sophomore Jessica Hetrich (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) with a 36-hole total, 164 (81-83). Fourth on the team was sophomore Amy Jones (Pine Grove, Pa./Blue Mountain), who after shooting an 85 on Saturday recovered to proudly sign her card on Sunday with an 80.
Sophomore Catherine Crews (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and freshman Liz Hardy (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) also logged course time this weekend for the women's golf. Crews shot 87 in the first round and tallied a 91 on the second day. Playing as an individual, Hardy shot consecutive 108's on Saturday and Sunday.
The women's golf team will wrap-up its spring golf season when it competes at the Hartford Invitational on Friday-Monday, April 20-23.
