Softball Team Suffers Doubleheader Sweep by Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate freshman Elena Isaac pitched a complete game three-hitter in the opener, and drove in the winning run in the nightcap to lead the Colgate softball team to a Patriot League doubleheader sweep over Bucknell, 4-1 and 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Eaton Street Field.
Bucknell (17-24-2, PL 8-10) must sweep Colgate (25-23 overall, PL 8-10) in Sunday's doubleheader to remain in contention for a berth in the Patriot League Tournament on May 5-6 in Allentown, Pa.
In the opener, Isaac picked up her seventh win of the season, allowing three hits, one run, walking three and striking out seven. She also went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Colgate opened the scoring in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Rachel Smith led off with a walk, and was sacrificed to second by Emily Wright. Then with two outs, Amanda Paolucci singled to left field, and ball got away from the Bucknell outfielder to allow Smith to score from second.
Bucknell tied the contest in the second inning on sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill's (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) double to center scoring freshman catcher Angela Stackhouse (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) from first base after she reached on a walk.
The Red Raiders exploded for three runs in the sixth inning for the victory. With two outs, Melissa Rawson singled through the left side. Paolucci reach on a controversial error by rightfielder Stephanie Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff), and raced all the way to third, and Rawson scored the go-ahead run. Amanda Brickell followed with her 11th double of the season to score Paolucci, and then came in on Isaac's single to right center.
Sophomore Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) (9-8) was the losing pitcher for the Bison. She allowed five hits, four unearned runs, walked one and struck out two in losing for the first time in six decisions.
In the second game, Bucknell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) single to right field scoring Gill from third.
The Red Raiders tied up the contest in the fourth inning. Wright opened with a single up the middle. Then after Rawson popped out, Wright stole second base. Wright moved to third on Paolucci's fly out before Brickell doubled to left center to score Wright.
The winning run came in the sixth inning. With one out, Rawson walked, and advanced to second on Paolucci's groundout. Brickell was hit by a pitch, and Isaac followed with the winning RBI on a single up the middle. Isaac, who played left field in the second game, was 2-for-3.
Freshman Lauren Wygant started for the Red Raiders, before Beth Haas (11-10) took over in the third inning. Haas shutdown the Bison on one hit, no runs, and struck out three over the last five innings for her 11th win of the season.
The two teams will be in action again on Sunday to complete the four-game series.
