LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman leftfielder Erin Doyle (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) ripped an RBI single up the middle to propel the Bison to a 2-1 victory in game two of a Patriot League softball doubleheader on Sunday, April 22. Lafayette scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings on its way to a 6-3 extra inning win in game one.
In the nightcap, BU put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) opened the inning with a triple to right centerfield. Two batters later, Gill scored on senior third baseman Charity Ford's (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport) RBI groundout. It became a defensive battle for the next three innings, before the Orange and Blue struck again. With one out and two on in the bottom of the fourth frame, Doyle drove a pitch from the Leopards' Mollie Moschberger up the middle to score junior Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley), who had reached base on a leadoff single to right field. Lafayette put together a rally in the top of the sixth, collecting three hits with two outs, but the Leopards could only manage one run in the frame. Kelly Wise followed Becky Chmielowski's double to center field with an RBI two-bagger to left center to put Lafayette on the board. Bucknell sophomore pitcher Brandi Porter (Interboro, Pa./Prospect Park) sent the Leopards down in order in the seventh, though, including two on called third strikes, to come away with her eighth win of the season.
Porter went the distance in the game, giving up seven hits, walking one and striking out five. At the plate, Doyle finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and Dugan went 2-for-2. Senior right fielder Steph Morgan (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) was 2-for-4 in the contest.
In the opener, Bucknell exploded for three runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Bison carried that lead into the top of the seventh frame when Lafayette scored three times in the inning, taking advantage of two hits and one error. With the bases loaded, Chmielowski smacked a triple to right center, clearing the bases and knotting the score at 3-3. The Orange and Blue failed to score in the bottom of the frame and the game headed to extra innings. The Leopards carried their momentum into the top of the eighth inning, scoring three more runs in the frame. Mara Shainheit had the big hit in the inning, clubbing a two-run triple to right center. Bucknell could not answer in its half of the eighth and the visitors came away with the 6-3, eight-inning win.
For Bucknell, Gill and freshman designated player Jenna Fitch (Wayne, Pa./The Shipley School) were both 2-for-4, while Ford went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.
BU improves to 16-21-2 overall and 8-8 in the Patriot League. Bucknell hosts St. Francis (Pa.) for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 24, at 3:00 p.m., before closing Patriot League play with a weekend series at Colgate on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29. Lafayette moves to 8-29 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
