FORT MYERS, Fla. - Bucknell junior Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to record what would prove to be the game-winning hit as the softball team defeated the University of Indianapolis, 2-0, on Tuesday, March 13, at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Class in Fort Myers, Fla.
Freshman Kristen Potts (Philipsburg, N.J./Philipsburg) led off the inning with a single to right center. Sophomore Meredith Gill (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second before Dugan's double to center field scored her. The Greyhounds got the next batter out, but the damage was done.
Bucknell would hold off several University of Indianapolis comeback attempts behind the stellar pitching of sophomore Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro). Porter pitched all seven innings, scattering four hits while striking out a career-high eight batters and walking only one for her first shutout victory of the year.
The Bison added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Melissa Monday (Livingston, N.J./Mt. Saint Dominic Academy), who was pinch running for sophomore Jacqueline Trapp (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) who had drawn a walk to open the inning, scored on Gill's single to second base.
Bucknell improves to 3-2 overall and will face Saint Peter's at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14.
