Eight BU Softball Players Named To Patriot League All-Decade Team

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Patriot League announced its All-Decade Softball Team today and seven former Bucknell University softball players and one current player were among the 20 players honored as members of the squad.
The team, comprised of two players at each of the nine field positions and two designated players, includes student-athletes from the inception of the league in 1990 up and through the 1999 season. A committee consisting of head coaches, institutional sports information liaisons and administrative liaisons conducted team selection for each of the 22 Patriot League sports. For the softball team, Bucknell had a representative at each position except pitcher.
Lisa Fink, a 1993 graduate and four-time all-league selection in the outfield, led the team and Patriot League her senior season with a .440 batting average, which ranked her 17th in the country. At the time of her graduation, Fink held five individual career school records, including four that still stand (runs scored, total bases, stolen bases and home runs). Fink was tabbed the Patriot League's Most Valuable Player in 1993, earning the award for the first time for a Bucknell player.
Her classmate, Jen Yuengling, was also a large contributor to the Bison team throughout her four-year career. A catcher for the Orange and Blue, Yuengling batted .397 her senior season and ran a school record-breaking 20-game hitting streak, the fifth longest in the country that year. She picked up all-league accolades in her final season and still holds the Bucknell season and career record for walks with 26 and 66, respectively.
Fink and Yuengling recorded a mark of 95-50-1 in their four years at Bucknell, and the duo was a part of Bucknell teams that posted a 75-36-1 record in the first three years of the Patriot League's existence.
Representing Bucknell at the first base position is 1994 graduate Heather Hoehn. An All-Patriot League selection her first three seasons, Hoehn finished her career as a Bison with the school record for runs batted in in a career with 93. That record still stands, as well as her career mark for putouts (1,014). Hoehn was also an all-conference player in volleyball at Bucknell and is currently the head volleyball coach at Villanova.
A 1997 graduate from Bucknell, Jen Gombos was named to the Patriot League All-Decade Team as a second baseman. Gombos, a senior on BU's first-ever Patriot League Championship team, was a four-year starter and three-year all-league player for the Bison. In her final season, Gombos broke the school record for triples in a career (16), clubbing seven three-baggers that year. She had the game winning hit in Bucknell's 4-1 extra-inning league title-game victory over Colgate, with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the 19th inning to spot BU to a 3-1 advantage.
Kristen Sandel was selected to the Patriot League All-Decade Team at the third base position. One year after Gombos set the school record for triples in a career with 16, Sandel bettered it with 18. A national Academic All-America as a junior, Sandel ended her career as a three-time All-Patriot League selection. At the time of her graduation, she held the school standard for triples in a season (8) and career, and hits in a season (54). Her season triples mark still stands.
Two players from the class of 1999, Jenny Snyder and Stacey Waite, were honored as members of the Patriot League All-Decade Team. Snyder rewrote the record books during her tenure at Bucknell. The team's starting shortstop each of the four years she played for the Bison, Snyder graduated with a total of 15 records, all of which still stand, including doubles in a game (two), season (14) and career (47). She was only the second player in school history to earn the Patriot League Player of the Year Award, and finished her career as a four-time all-league selection.
Waite was both a pitcher and designated player for the Bucknell squad. She was selected to the All-Decade Team as a designated player. Waite capped her outstanding career with a first-team selection to the All-Patriot League team as a DP after being named to the second-team in her three previous seasons, twice as a designated player (1996, '97) and once as a pitcher (1998). Waite was also successful in the classroom, earning Regional Academic All-America honors in her final two seasons.
Bucknell's final representative on the All-Decade team has the distinction of being only one of two players named who are still in school. Current Bucknell junior Jenna Demetriades (Nesquehoning, Pa./Tamaqua) was selected to the team for her accomplishments in centerfield. A two-year starter and All-Patriot League first-team member, Demetriades has enjoyed great success her first two seasons. She has been first or second on the team in nearly every offensive category the first two years, including finishing second in the league in slugging percentage with a .591 average as a sophomore. In addition to her offensive power, Demetriades has proven a menace to opposing teams. Of Bucknell's four double plays last season, Demetriades was active in three of them from her perch in centerfield.
