WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bucknell University volleyball team concluded its 2001 season this afternoon at the Patriot League Championship tournament. The Bison dropped a 3-0 decision to American University, the tournament's top seed and host institution.
The Bison finished the year with a 12-13 overall record and a 7-7 Patriot League mark. American, which completed an undefeated 14-0 regular season record in the Patriot League, improved to 25-2. On Sunday, American will play the winner of this afternoon's other semi-final winner between second-seeded Lehigh and No. 3 Army.
Bucknell was defeated 30-13 in the opening game, but turned things around in the second set and nearly became the first team from the Patriot League to win a game against the Eagles all season. Bucknell held a 29-28 edge late in the game before American rallied to outscore the Bison 4-1 the rest of the way. American then won game three by a score of 30-22.
Senior Shannon Walker led the Bison with a team-high eight kills to go with two blocks in her final collegiate match. Walker, a 2001 All-Patriot League First Team selection and a Verizon District 2 Academic All-American, finished an outstanding career at Bucknell ranked second on the school's all-time kills list with 1,254 kills. She also ended up fourth on the all-time blocks list with 282 career rejections.
Junior Melanie Ghiz also recorded eight digs and two blocks, and freshman Jackie Leahy posted a team-high nine digs. Sophomore Brandi Trapasso added five kills, six digs, and tied a match-high with three service aces, while sophomore Breean Trapasso dished out a team-high 17 assists.
