COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Bucknell Subway Classic - Villanova Comes out on Top
Lewisburg, Pa. --- This weekend the Bucknell women's volleyball team hosted the annual Subway Classic. In round-robin action the final scheduled match conveniently turned out to be the championship contest between unscathed Bucknell and Villanova.
The final contest was played in front of a capacity crowd in Davis Gymnasium, the direct result of it being Parent's Weekend. The Bison, whom had only faced Villanova five previous times in their history and lost all five contests, were looking for a change in fortune versus the Wildcats. In the first game of the contest, the two teams played to an emotional 15-13 win for Villanova. The second stanza saw the momentum turn in favor of the Bison with a dramatic 16-14 win. The Wildcats kept grinding out points as they wore down the Orange and Blue in the final two sets winning 15-4 and 15-5, thus clinching the Subway Classic title.
In addition to the final victory over Bucknell, Villanova was victorious in contests against Canisius and Marist. Bucknell finished the weekend with a very respectable 2-1 record and second place in the Subway Classic. Rounding out the field was Canisius with a 1-2 record, the lone win coming against Marist (0-3).
Selected to the all-tournament team for the Wildcats was senior middle blocker Breen Eddinger and freshman setter Jennifer Edwards. Eddinger led Villanova with 2.56 kills per game and 3.00 digs per game. Edwards was solid at the setter position with 78 set assists over nine games. Representing Bucknell on the all-tournament team was junior setter Whitney Williams (LaJolla, Calif./LaJolla) and senior outside hitter Brooke Bader (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria). Williams moves into fourth place all-time for career sets with her 87 set assists this past weekend while Bader had another strong tournament with 19 kills and 24 digs. Nominated to the all-tournament team for Canisius was sophomore middle hitter Erin Cantaben and Marist was represented by sophomore outside hitter Julie Gosewisch.
