Manhattan Steals The Show At BU Invitational

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Bucknell Volleyball Invitational - Manhattan Takes The Crown
Lewisburg, Pa. --- This weekend the Bucknell women's volleyball team hosted its annual invitational, in the past called the Bucknell Triad. This year's tourney expanded in size to five teams and the use of two volleyball courts. After all was said and done at the end of Saturday, the Manhattan Jaspers had clinched the tournament victory by going undefeated in four contests, including an epic five game battle versus Virginia Commonwealth.
Leading the way for the Jaspers were All-Tournament selections, middle hitter Kim Frederick and right side hitter Bridgett Geddes. Geddes, a sophomore at Manhattan, started the tournament as her team's setter, but finished the tournament as a hitter with 32 kills on 109 attempts and 12 service aces. Frederick, a junior for the Jaspers had 48 kills on 118 attempts for a .288 hitting percentage. Manhattan defeated Bucknell 3-1 (15-8, 15-8, 8-15, 15-13), St. Francis 3-0 (15-10, 15-4, 15-2), Stony Brook 3-2 (10-15, 15-4, 15-3, 16-18, 15-5) and Virginia Commonwealth 3-2 (12-15, 4-15, 15-6, 17-15, 15-7).
Virginia Commonwealth finished the BU Invitational in second place with a final record of 3-1, its only loss to eventual tournament champion, Manhattan. Shelley Sprouse, a senior middle blocker for the Rams, was selected to the All-Tournament team. Sprouse completed competition totally 41 kills on 98 attempts for a .347 hitting percentage and blocking a total of 17 hits. Virginia, on its way to a 3-1 mark for the tourney, defeated Stony Brook 3-0 (15-12, 15-10, 15-2), Bucknell 3-1 (15-13, 7-15, 15-9, 15-6) and St. Francis 3-0 (15-13, 15-11, 15-8). The Rams only loss was to Manhattan, a five set heartbreaker 3-2.
Finishing in third were the Seawolves from Stony Brook, with a 2-2 tournament record, closely followed by Bucknell with a 1-3 tally. St. Francis finished the tournament with a 0-4 record, however, all of which were close matches.
