Lewisburg, Pa. --- This afternoon the Bucknell women's volleyball team split two games with Canisius and Villanova at the Subway Classic. The Orange and Blue had beaten Canisius earlier in the season and continued the trend with a three set win, 15-5, 15-11, and 15-11.
In the Canisius game, the Bison were led by the precision hitting of junior Shannon Walker (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) with 12 kills on 24 attempts for a hitting percentage of .333. Walker was the main beneficiary of junior Whitney Williams (LaJolla, Calif./LaJolla) 31 set assists. The victory put the Orange and Blue in position to win the tourney crown with a 2-0 record. However, in order to win the Subway Classic the Herd would first have to go through the Wildcats of Villanova.
The last contest of the afternoon put the Bison up against a strong team from Villanova. In a match that lacked nothing short of excitement, the Wildcats outlasted the Orange and Blue and won the contest 3-1 (15-13, 14-16, 15-4, 15-5). Bucknell was led by strong performances from two individuals, sophomore Jen Wrigley (Benicia, Calif./Benicia) and Williams. Wrigley led all Bison with 15 kills on 27 attempts for a hitting percentage of .259. Williams continued her solid play by adding 36 set assists to her total as well as showing her defensive skills by recording 25 digs. Villanova comes away from the Subway Classic as the overall champion and a 3-0 tournament record.
The volleyball team, after three matches this weekend, improves to 4-11 on the season and will play again this Friday, September 29 when it opens its conference schedule by hosting Navy at 7:30 p.m.
