Madison, Wisc. - The women's volleyball team saw its 2000 season come to a close as the #1 seeded team in the Mid-East Region of the NCAA Tournament, Wisconsin, handed them a defeat in three straight sets. The Bison, playing in front of a crowd of nearly 4000, competed against a strong Wisconsin team in the three games, 15-1, 15-0, 15-3.
After winning the Patriot League Championship and the league's automatic bid into the 64-team field of the NCAA Tournament, drew the third ranked Badgers squad. This was the second appearance for Bucknell volleyball in the NCAA Tournament in three years, having played Penn State in the tourney in 1998.
In the match, the Orange and Blue did see a brief lead in the third set when they managed to score the first two points of the game. However, the Badgers were not to be disappointed as they took the final game, 15-3, to win the match and advance to the second round to take on #8 Northern Iowa.
"Our season is determined by what we accomplished after starting with a 2-10 record. We finished in the top of the Patriot League class, had several all-league players and outstanding overall campaign," commented Coach Opalski in the post-match press conference. "We came in with some experience having played Penn State early on, but were a little bit in awe of our surroundings. I'm proud of the girls and we had a great season."
Bucknell finishes the 2000 ledger with a 17-15 overall record and the Patriot League trophy, along with all four major conference individual awards. The Bison had an excellent season as they won their last 15-of-20 contests to reach the NCAA Tournament.
