LEWISBURG, PA - Bucknell University junior middle hitter Shannon Walker (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) was named as the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete recipient in the sport of volleyball for the 2000 season.
Since the league's inception in 1990-91, Walker is the 80th Bucknell student-athlete to be named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete - more than double the next closest institution in the conference.
In order to be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete award a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better, and must be a starter or key reserve on his/her team. A panel of athletic administrators comprised of the Patriot League staff and each institution's director of athletic communications selects the winners. The recipients are eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor awarded at the conclusion of the academic calendar.
The 6'0" middle hitter led the Patriot League this season in hitting percentage (.291) and kills per game (3.61). Walker also showed her defensive prowess by recording 0.69 blocks per contest, good enough to rank ninth in the conference. She was the only athlete in the Patriot League to win player-of-the-week honors three times during the season. At the conclusion of the campaign she was recognized by the conference for her achievements and named the Offensive Player of the Year as well as first team All-Patriot League honors.
Walker, a sociology major with a 3.41 GPA and a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, was a key component to a record-breaking season for Bucknell volleyball. Her 404 kills on the season is the second best season total in the programs history, only 17 behind the record. Also broken was the benchmark for team kills in a season of 1407, the mark is now a whopping 1592 set by the 2000 squad.
She is the third Bucknell volleyball player to earn the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete honor. Kathleen Sullivan (1991) and Katie Steele (1995) each won the award once during their careers at Bucknell.
