LEWISBURG, PA - Jeffrey Konya, a 1995 graduate of Princeton University who holds a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, has been named Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance & Student Affairs at Bucknell University, Director of Athletics John Hardt announced.
Konya comes to Bucknell from the University of South Dakota where he has served as the director of compliance and student services for the past two years. During his time there he formulated and initiated South Dakota's first compliance program, including developing the school's first compliance manual, a coaches' recruiting log, a department drug and alcohol policy, an agent policy and a system for monitoring playing and practice seasons. In addition, he was an adjunct professor and taught classes in the area of Sports Law.
"We are extremely excited to appoint Bucknell's very first full-time compliance administrator, and I know Jeff will do an outstanding job," commented Hardt on the appointment. "He has a very strong educational background, and in the relatively short time he has been working in intercollegiate athletics he has more than exhibited the skills we believe are necessary to implement and maintain a strong compliance program."
At Bucknell, Konya will be responsible for all facets of the department of athletics and recreation's compliance program, and will also coordinate the department's student affairs area. "This is a very important position for the University," stated Hardt. "It will finally allow Bucknell to move on par with other NCAA Division I programs in addressing our compliance and student-athletes needs."
As the chief compliance officer, Konya will be responsible for maintaining institutional compliance with the NCAA, ECAC, Patriot League and University rules, as well as promptly reporting any violations of those rules. At Bucknell he will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the department's compliance and rules education program, and coordinating and monitoring the certification of student-athletes' eligibility and financial aid. In addition, Konya will serve as the primary liaison with the University's Compliance Committee.
As the coordinator of student affairs, Konya will act as the liaison with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Dean of Students Office, as well as other University offices related to student affairs. In addition, he will direct various student-athlete programs (community outreach, code of conduct, etc.), and he will coordinate the department's successful Sideline Coaches program.
In addition to his compliance responsibilities at South Dakota, Konya also directed the athletic department's ticket operation and assisted in corporate marketing campaigns. Prior to his time there, he served as a staff attorney at The AYCO Company, L.P., in Albany, New York, where he was exposed to Federal and state tax laws, charitable contribution issues, and budget requirements.
He began his career in intercollegiate athletics while in law school, serving as an assistant to the associate director of athletics at the University of Iowa from June of 1996 to June of 1998.
At Princeton, Konya was a member of the Tiger football team and the junior varsity basketball team.
Bucknell sponsors 28 intercollegiate sports, 14 each for men and women, at the Division I level (I-AA in football). It is a charter member of the Patriot League and has won the league's all-sports championship in seven of the ten years it has been contested. Bucknell continually ranks among the top institutions in student-athlete graduation rate in Division I every year, and ranks third in Division I in producing GTE Academic All-Americans.
