Lewisburg, Pa. --- Last night the Bucknell volleyball team fortified its first place position in the Patriot League with a 3-1 victory over Army. The victory, coming on the second night of Homecoming Weekend, improves the Bison record to 8-1 in the Patriot League and an overall record of 13-13. This is the first time since the 2000 campaign began that the volleyball team has had a .500 record.
Coach Opalski's squad used a very balanced attack to wear down the Black Knights in a match that lasted a little over two hours. Junior Shannon Walker (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) led the Orange and Blue for the second straight night in hitting with 23 kills, only one less kill than her Friday night performance. Also having an excellent night above the net was senior co-captain Brooke Bader (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) who recorded 16 kills on 39 attempts while only committing two errors. Bader was not just an offensive force against Army, but also recorded a game-high 22 defensive digs for a double-double.
In the loss, Army was led by sophomore Leah Shubin (Bakersfield, Calif.) who recorded a double-double in the contest with 12 kills and 14 defensive digs. The Black Knights drop to 15-10 overall on the season and 5-5 in conference action.
Bucknell has only three more conference matches left on its schedule and the rest of the season. Next on the docket is a road trip to the Lehigh Valley to play against Lafayette on Friday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. and Lehigh the next night at 7:00 p.m.
