William A. Graham IV
- Induction:
- 2018
- Class:
- 1962
Bill Graham was a standout wrestler at Bucknell, and as an alumnus he served on the Board of Trustees while becoming one of his alma mater’s largest benefactors. As a student-athlete, the Flourtown, Pa., native and William Penn Charter School graduate captained the Bison to a 9-0 record in 1961-62, which is one of only two perfect seasons in team history. He finished 7-1 with two pins that season, competing in the 191-pound and heavyweight classes. He was a starter at 177 pounds as a sophomore, and competed all the way up in the heavyweight division by his senior year.
After graduation, Graham went on to a very successful business career, where he became the chairman and chief executive officer of The Graham Company in Philadelphia, one of the nation’s largest insurance brokerages. His generous support of Bison Athletics impacted hundreds of men’s and women’s student-athletes, most notably the wrestling program, which Graham helped restore to full varsity status in 2005 after it had been discontinued.
His generous gifts paved the way for the construction of Graham Field, the home of the Bison field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams, and the Graham Building, which houses the wrestling team’s training center as well as the university’s student health center. Graham immersed himself in the sport of wrestling at the national level, and he was inducted into the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Graham was named the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) University Division Donor of the Year in 2007. In 2013, he was recognized by The Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers (CIAB) as one of the top “Game Changers” over the last 100 years. Graham was also honored by The Philadelphia Insurance Society as the 2013 recipient of the Society's prestigious Distinguished Leadership Award. At Bucknell, Graham became one of the university's most noteworthy donors and was the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Citizenship Award.
