Known as the finest pass receiver in Bucknell football history, Tom Mitchell was twice selected ECAC College Division Player of the Year and first team Little All-American, and he was a three-time All-Pennsylvania selection. Mitchell was selected as an All-Middle Atlantic Conference tight end three times, and he was named conference MVP in 1964, the same year that he ranked fourth in the nation with 71 receptions for 886 yards and six touchdowns. That year, Bucknell compiled a 7-2 record and its second Lambert Cup. Mitchell left with every Bucknell receiving record. His totals of 173 catches for 2,358 yards were nearly double the figures of any other Bucknell receiver, and they held up as school records for more than 50 years. A third-round choice of the Oakland Raiders in the 1964 American Football League Draft, Mitchell played for the Raiders in 1966, and then he went on to play for the National Football League's Baltimore Colts (1968-73) and San Francisco 49ers (1974-77). He played in two Super Bowls with the Colts, including a win in Super Bowl V, and he also helped the Colts to the 1968 NFL title in the pre-Super Bowl era. Mitchell was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1979.
