Stu Smith made college football history when he scored the first two touchdowns in the inaugural Orange Bowl game, a 26-0 Bucknell victory over Miami in 1935. A fullback and linebacker who served as co-captain of the 1936 team, he played on three Bison teams coached by Edward "Hook" Mylin that had a combined 17-9-3 record, owned two victories each over Penn State and Villanova, and had two scoreless ties and a 7-6 win against Temple. Following his senior season, Smith played for the Eastern College All-Star team against the New York Giants and was named MVP of the game. He later played for Pittsburgh in the NFL, but a knee injury forced his retirement in 1939. As an undergraduate, Smith also played guard on the basketball team and was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The football team's outstanding newcomer award has been named in his honor since 1971.
