A two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Conference boxing champion, Steve Stephanou also played football for four years at Bucknell. Stephanou captured his first Eastern boxing title while competing at 115 pounds as a sophomore in 1936. Although he did not win individual honors in his junior year, Bucknell won the team championship. By his senior season, Stephanou was up to 125 pounds and took home another individual title. Certainly one of the smallest football players of his day, Stephanou brought a toughness to the game that resulted in winning a varsity letter in his senior season. He later refereed boxing and was a longtime official and president of regional football and basketball officials associations.Â
