Roger J. Schwanhausser
- Induction:
- 2002
- Class:
- 1975
Sport: Swimming, Water Polo
Roger Schwanhausser was one of the leaders of a terrific Bison swimming team that captured four straight Middle Atlantic Conference and East Coast Conference team championships. In addition to winning three individual conference titles, Schwanhausser earned gold medals on 11 different relays, including three in 1973 and all four in 1975, when all of the wins came in record time. In addition to setting four ECC marks in 1975, the Bison achieved the rare accomplishment of winning all four relays with the same men. A native of Summit, N.J., Schwanhausser demonstrated his versatility and teamwork by handling a leg on the 800 free relay as well as the breaststroke leg on the 400 medley relay. He graduated with Bucknell records in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley. In 1975 Schwanhausser was presented the William Dearstyne-William Dorr Award, given annually to "that person who, by performance, leadership and example, contributes the most to the Bucknell men's swimming team." His son, Stephen '03, also swam for the Bison and set school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. They became the first father-son combination in school history in any sport to have held school records. At the time of Stephen's graduation, the duo appeared on the same Bucknell top-10 list in the 200 IM, with Stephen fifth and Roger ninth. Roger was also a four-year member and a captain of the Bison water polo team, for which he helped win two Eastern Championships.Â
