Richard J. Sayre
- Induction:
- 1991
- Class:
- 1982
Sports: Cross Country, Track and Field
One of the finest among a distinguished group of distance runners who have competed for Bucknell, Rick Sayre was on cross country teams that made four straight appearances in the NCAA Championships, received All-America recognition in track and field in 1981 when he qualified for the NCAA steeplechase final in a school-record 8:42.40, and earned All-East recognition six times. A member of the Bison cross country team that won the IC4A Championship in 1980, Sayre twice co-captained the harriers and received Al-East recognition in 1979 and 1980. As a steeplechaser, he was second and third at the Colonial Relays in 1980 and 1981, qualifying for the NCAA meet both years; was second at the Penn Relays in 1981; was fourth in the IC4A Championships in 1980 and 1981; and was third in the AAU Junior National Championships in 1979. Sayre also earned indoor All-East honors by placing fifth in the IC4A 5,000 meters in 1980 and 1981 and was on Bucknell teams that won seven ECC team championships in cross country and track and field. The number would have been higher, but a stress fracture forced him to miss his senior track seasons. Sayre, who received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, came to Bucknell from Manhasset (N.Y.) High School.
