Hulme, Mark D.

Mark D. Hulme
- Induction:
- 2001
- Class:
- 1983
Sports: Cross Country, Track and Field
Mark Hulme played a big part in legendary coach Art Gulden's program while at Bucknell as a member of nine ECC cross country and track and field championship teams. He was All-East in cross country in 1980, 1981 and 1982 and competed in the NCAA Championships in that sport all four years. As a senior, the Bison cross country team went 7-0 in dual competition, extending its winning streak to 93 (it would grow all the way to 167). The team won its eighth straight ECC title, captured the District Two crown, finished second to Providence at the IC4A Championship, and played 12th as a team at the NCAA Championship, its best national finish ever. Hall-of-Fame coach Art Gulden termed that 1982 squad his "best ever." Hulme was a big part of it, finishing third at ECCs, 15th at districts, and 62nd at NCAAs.Â
In track, Hulme won individual ECC indoor championship titles in the mile (1982 and 1983) and the 1,000-yard run (1983), and he competed in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1982. He was named the Outstanding Athlete at the 1983 conference indoor meet. At the IC4A Outdoor Championships his senior year, Hulme placed fourth in the 1,500 in what Gulden called "one of the best tactical races ever run by a Bucknell athlete." In addition to breaking the school record in the 1,500 with a time of 3:43.84 -- the equivalent of a 4:01 mile -- he also had a hand in Bucknell records in three different relays. At the 1982 ECC Indoor Championships, in the span of 90 minutes he won the mile and led a 2-3-4 Bison finish in the two-mile run that helped the Bison win an extremely close meet, its third ECC title in the last five years. Later that spring, Hulme won the 1,500 to help Bucknell win the ECC outdoor title, which gave the team its very first ECC "triple crown". Hulme shattered school records in the 1,500-meter run, both indoors and outdoors, the indoor 1,000 meters, the outdoor 4x800-meter relay and the 4-mile relay. He also ranked second at graduation in the indoor and outdoor mile and second in the outdoor mile.Â
