Sports: Basketball, Tennis, Basketball Coach, Football Coach, Baseball Coach
Malcolm E. "Mal" Musser played varsity basketball and tennis during his undergraduate years, but he is even more fondly remembered for the effect he had on the lives of generations of Bucknellians as a coach and later as the Dean of Men and Associate in Admissions. Musser's first coaching experience came in his senior year, when he led the varsity basketball team to an 11-3 record. He coached the squad twice more before becoming a full-time faculty member in 1926. He carried a 33-13 career record before he officially worked at Bucknell. Musser coached freshman football, baseball and baseball until 1931-32, when he again took over varsity basketball. He held the reins until 1942, and in four stints over 13 years as the team's mentor, he compiled a record of 110-99. Musser was the University's Dean of Men from 1947-57 and an associate in Admissions from 1959-65. In 1965, he was named the fifth recipient of the Bison Club Award, an honor bestowed for outstanding contributions to Bucknell's athletics program. In 1974, the University went a step further, recognizing Musser for "his outstanding contributions to his fellow man."
