Joseph R. Markulike Jr.
- Induction:
- 2001
- Class:
- 1990
Sport: Baseball
A two-time first team all-conference shortstop, Joe Markulike set 17 records his senior year, hit .454 (5th in the nation) and was selected as a Second Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The two-time team captain compiled a career batting average of .395, which ranked third in Bucknell annals at the time of his graduation, and he started every game from his freshman through senior years. During that remarkable senior season in 1990, which was Bucknell's first on its brand new diamond on the west side of Rt. 15, Markulike also ranked second nationally with eight triples, which helped the Bison lead the nation in triples per game. He led the league in stolen bases and runs batted in, thanks to a blistering .645 average with runners in scoring position. Markulike was also a standout in the classroom as a mechanical engineering major, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and ECC Scholar-Athlete honors for three years. As a senior he was tabbed the ECC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the overall CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year. He earned both the Christy Mathewson Award as the most outstanding senior athlete, and the Edward W. Pangburn Award for sportsmanship, fellowship, and contributions to Bucknell. Markulike was the recipient of the Louis W. Robey Prize, presented to the senior in the entire student body who best exemplifies the aims of a Bucknell education. He also performed with the Bucknell Wind Ensemble, was inducted into several honor societies, and still found time to be a statistician and clock operator at Bucknell football and basketball games. A native of nearby Williamsport, he played in the Atlanta Braves organization following graduation.Â
