Joe Gallagher starred in football and basketball as an undergraduate at Bucknell. A starting end on the undefeated 1951 Bison football team, Gallagher was selected for the Associated Press All-Pennsylvania Second Team that year and received honorable mention on the AP All-East and Little All-America teams. He twice caught two touchdown passes in a game against Temple, averaged 23.5 yards per reception during his career and his total of 1,036 receiving yards was one of the highest in school history at the time. Gallagher scored 1,183 points in basketball, was co-captain of the 1950-51 team, and held the Bucknell career scoring record until 1962. His 366 points in 1949-50 were then a school record. A graduate of Newark (N.J.) Central High School, Gallagher was president of the "B" Club and was also a high jumper and half-miler on the track and field team. He later played professional basketball with the Williamsport Billies.
