Sports: Baseball, Basketball
A three-year letterman in baseball and basketball, Jack Webber played on baseball teams that were 28-20 and won two Middle Atlantic Conference championships and on a basketball team that was Bucknell's highest scoring ever at that time. An outstanding defensive shortstop who batted nearly .300, he played every inning of every baseball game for three straight years and was Most Valuable Player on the 1952 team, which he co-captained. A guard in basketball, Webber capped a career that saw him score 451 points by averaging 9.6 points per game as a senior on a team that set a then-Bucknell record with 73.2 points per game. Signed by the Chicago White Sox following graduation, he was the top fielding shortstop in the Wisconsin State League in 1952, and in 1953 and 1954 he played on Army World Series championship teams at Brooke Army Medical Center teams that also included Don Newcombe and Bob Turley. A graduate of Gloucester (Mass.) High School and a charter member of that school's Hall of Fame, he was coached in high school and recruited to Bucknell by Bucknell graduate Norman "Nate" Boss, and he was coached at Bucknell by Hall of Famer Bill Lane. Webber later served as a Major League Baseball scout with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds, and he was honored with the Bison Club Award in 1991.Â
