Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame
Plant, John M.

John M. Plant
- Induction:
- 1982
Sports/Position: Director of Physical Education, Track and Field Coach, Basketball Coach, Boxing Coach
John Plant served Bucknell in numerous capacities and was honored as "The Grand Old Man of Bucknell Athletics" when he retired in 1947. A member of the athletic staff at the Peddie School for 17 years before coming to Bucknell in 1926, "John" as he was known to students and colleagues, served as director of physical education and head coach of track and field from 1926-47, was head basketball coach from 1926-32, and was co-coach (with Mal Musser) of the boxing team from 1928-30. Plant, whose basketball teams had a 59-49 record and set a school victory mark that was unmatched for 29 years, also helped to coach baseball and soccer. From his goal of incorporating exercise into every Bucknell student's daily routine, the school's intramural program was born. Stressing "participation for all," the intramural system was emulated by many schools. A native of England who played professional basketball from many years, Plant coached football and track at Peddie, and his basketball teams won six New Jersey Prep School Championships.Â
